Cancer: The Begginings of Mental Growing Pains
Cancer: The Beginning of Growing Pains
That word Cancer, the word that no one wants to mention when it hits home. Cancer brings about two parallel growing pains. The physical pain of the cancer growing inside the individual plus the emotional pains experienced by everyone in connection with the individual. I want to focus on the emotional pains that Cancer can conjure. If you haven’t been a person who has been close to someone that has had cancer or have had cancer yourself you are a blessed individuals. But I am assuming, and can guesstimate that at least 80 percent America’s population have a cancer story. Cancer does a number on us mentally mostly through shock, disbelief, bewilderment, fear, and sadness. One thing I can say about cancer is that anyone who has encountered the disease will grow emotionally through the diverse, intrinsically complicated, and cathartic experiences that it brings.Click Here!
My Cancer Story
I remember when my mother called me one night on the phone crying and said, “I have some bad news.” I said what is it ma.” Your dad has a tumor. Now she thought that my initial reaction would be to become very emotional. But I recall the first thing that I said was, “is the tumor benign or malignant.” My mom paused, probably in shock and said, “weren’t not sure. “ This cancer thing wasn’t going to scare me. Until I had more details I wasn’t going to show any emotion. But the reality was that I was so shocked I didn’t want to believe it to be true. I didn’t grow emotionally, I regressed. I never cried. I treated it like it was a project and I had to find a solution because I was not ready to deal with the reality of what Cancer is. Cancer was the first time I was really caught off guard. I rushed home from college to help my mom the week that my dad went in for surgery. I talked and grilled the doctor to explain to me what was going on and confirm that the tumor was benign. Fortunately my dad’s tumor was benign and with the proper medical procedure and treatment he is coping and living today, but that is not the case for many individuals. This is just one of the family cancer stories and there are many more that happened during my lifetime. In my father’s case I didn’t go through the full ranges of emotions. I was spared the full on slot of growing pains. Many other individuals do not have the option of facing the cancer survivor outcome.
Cancer coping
Block it out! Will it work? Maybe for a while but the emotions will manifest one of two ways usually in emotional eruptions or emotional depression. What we want to focus on is emotional breakthroughs. Catharsis is the elimination of a complex by bringing it to consciousness and affording it expression. More simply stated catharsis is “getting it all out.” You know when you feeling your worst, snot runs from your nose, as you cry uncontrollably and your family member or friends rubs your back and says, ”it’s ok, let it all out.” Well some people do not go immediately to this emotion. Sometimes they may need a more constructive approach to expressing these pent up emotions. The question is how we get to catharsis when where dealing with the complex growing pains of cancer. Knowing how sensitive the subject of cancer is I would never offer advice on one specific way to cope. Grieving naturally is important and perfectly normal when we are suffering any sort of traumatic experiences whether directly or through others. I guess my intention here is offer techniques to focus those growing pains.
Your under attack: Use your defense mechanisms!
Has anyone ever heard of defense mechanisms? The Sigmund Freud was the person who identified defense mechanism in human behavior to deal with the anxieties of our realities. Sigmund Freud was on to something and I bet he didn’t know that it was a great technique for dealing with that bastard called cancer. Defense mechanisms by any means do not correct psychological disorders. If you or someone that cares for you well being observes hints or signs of serious depression for prolonged periods, I suggest that you seek professional counseling. There are various defense mechanisms for different situations and if you would like to read more on this subject (click this link) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_mechanism. What defense mechanisms do are assist individuals in lessening traumatic feelings. One of the most effective and positive defense mechanisms is sublimation.
Sublimation: the Ultimate Defense!
What is sublimation?
What is sublimation? Sublimation by definition is the transformation of negative emotions or instincts into positive actions, behavior, or emotion. What could possibly be your sublimation? I couldn’t possibly begin to guess the infinite hobbies that people engage in. You’re getting warm when you talk about hobbies and sublimation in the same sentence. Writing, making music, poetry, drawing, art, even blogging can be used to channel negative emotions into positive expression. Volunteering at the cancer ward at your local hospital while a family member is suffering from cancer is an act of positive sublimation. Another example of positive sublimation would be creating a cancer foundation in dedication of someone who is suffering from cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness is Important
My wife told me that this month was Breast Cancer awareness month. There are many different types of cancer some terminal and some treatable. I want to remind all women to receive their mammograms and everyone to also get regular check-ups from their doctors. Cancer is tricky. It comes unexpectedly and acts like a casino on your life. A healthy lifestyle and preventative awareness are two methods to prolonging your life. They are also essential in dealing with cancer. I believe you’re your mindset is one of the underrepresented soldiers in the fight against cancer. I hope this article adds to your arsenal and slay those growing pains!
