Networking is the act of building relationships with other individuals who may share similar thoughts and goals. One of the active forms in which we network is through meeting people and talking face to face. Many times we go out to coffee houses, hold seminars, visit nightclubs, hold dinner parties, and community meetings to network with other individuals. Speaking about your thoughts and feeling is very important in networking situations. Why? Because the average individual is not a mind readers. There are many ways to state when you are not pleased or do not agree with another individual. You should always state you point in a group situation even if brief because people naturally form assumptions and they can be incorrect. Like the saying go's people who form assumptions can make an ass out of themselves but those assess can influence other people in a group to think along the same wavelength if your position is not stated clearly to others.
Group Dynamics
What is Group Dynamics? Group dynamics is process of interaction between people for a common goal in a shared space and at a shared time. Anyone in a situation with two or more individuals is considered a group.
When I meet individuals for the first time I don't usually talk much. Other individuals reading this blog may be similar to me or not. I can usually attribute my silence to discomfort and unfamiliarity of the situation but if you are present you are communicating. In a group most people assume that you have a connection with that cause, regardless of the reason for the meeting. Something that I have observed in certain individuals is that if they do not talk, they feel like they do not communicate anything. People who don't speak also communicate information. In group dynamics a person that doesn't speak is called an outlier. Outliers are people who choose not to participate and observe the natural process of interaction. People who observe and do not participate in a group situation have assumptions made about them by others in the group. These assumptions can be positive or negative but it is better for you to state at least your positive intentions for the benefit of the group.
Speak or hold your Peace
I suggests that you always try to present your most honest opinions in a networking situation. Honesty is a quality that is wins over many individuals in group situations and in life. If your opinions are stated in a polite manner most of the time they will be considered in a decision making process or present you as a person who is assertive and forthcoming. Silence may be easier for you but people who understand your position usually feel more comfortable with you. Comfort with another individuals can lead to positive feelings and people enjoy networking with people who are honest, assertive and makes them feel comfortable. Now go and build those relationships and make sure you let them know where you stand!
