Transference Anger of Eminem
An example of a person using transference is the artist Eminem. When he first came out with his previous albums, The Slim Shady LP and Marshall Mathers LP, he was saying derogatory statements about homosexuals. Many individuals, the media, and politicians were upset with what he was saying about this group of people. Most people believed that he was an immoral person and unfairly attacked a group of people suffering enough from discrimination. Some thought that his homophobia came from the fact that he was himself experiencing homosexual feelings and was very uncomfortable with these thoughts. Transference is the redirection of feelings and desires and especially of those unconsciously retained from childhood toward a new object or person. What came to light in Eminem’s last album, The Relapse, was that his misogynistic and homophobic lyrics stemmed from the fact that he was molested and abused by his mother’s boyfriend. Eminem even states that music was his therapy because he couldn’t verbalize some of the negative feelings that still remained from being violated, neglected, and mistreated during his childhood and adolescence. Should you go and make offensive songs about all your traumatic situations? no, but the idea is, and what Eminem did, was channel many of his negative feelings into his talents and art form which although garnered controversy probably help lessen his anxiety in dealing with past sexual abuse.Click Here!
